Golden and Gem Treasure Chest

Project type:

Container Texturing project in Maya and Photoshop.

Project description:

For this project, I UV mapped a treasure chest in Maya and texture painted a Treasure Chest in Photoshop. Additionally, I created 2 textures for my container. Since multiple skins or colorations are very common in 3D game art, I created a 3D texture and then a different coloration of the same texture.

------------------

The main objective for this project is to learn fundamentals with UVs and texturing on hard surface models. A second objective is to gain comfort navigating between software. One of the challenges with this assignment is texturing a 3D object in a 2D painting software, which requires planning and moving back and fourth.

Reflection:

This project significantly improved my understanding of proper UV mapping techniques in 3D modeling. Prior to this, I relied heavily on Maya's automatic UV mapping, accepting the default results without much customization. Through this project, I learned how to manually lay out UVs, strategically cut and stitch seams, and optimize shell placement to ensure textures display cleanly and consistently.

One of the more challenging aspects was creating evenly sized and properly oriented UV shells for the treasure chest’s bail handles. This required careful adjustment to maintain proportion and texture alignment across curved surfaces.
